Expecting a baby is an exciting time, and many parents-to-be want to capture this special moment with maternity photos. If you’re in Greenville, SC or Spartanburg, SC, you have plenty of options for finding a skilled and experienced maternity photographer. It can be overwhelming to narrow it down. Combine that with the newness of all that comes with an infant and growing your family, and trying to find a maternity photographer you’re comfortable with can seem like a mountain to climb.
But… in the spirit of transparency and without gatekeeping, I want to give you some of my best tips to choosing the right maternity photographer for YOU and creating timeless photos that you’ll cherish for years to come.
Choose a maternity photographer who has experience.
One of the BEST ways to filter out all the photographers in your area is to find one with experience in shooting maternity photos. Maternity photography requires a certain level of skill and expertise to capture the beauty and emotion of this special time.
You’re going to need to do some research. Look for a photographer who has a portfolio of maternity photos that you love and who can provide references from other satisfied clients (or at least has a solid amount of raving reviews). One way to find a great maternity photographer is to ask for recommendations from friends or family members who have had maternity photos taken. You can also search online for photographers in your area and read reviews from previous clients. Make sure to look at the photographer’s portfolio to get a sense of their style and the quality of their work.
Don’t be afraid to ask about their experience and training in maternity photography, as well as their approach to posing and lighting. Will they pose you in ways where you’re not only comfortable but also showing off your growing bump in a flattering way? Will they understand the changes your body is going through and all the emotions that accompany that? (Oof, it’s a lot).
Another important factor to consider when choosing a maternity photographer is your personal connection with them. You want to feel comfortable and at ease with your photographer, as this will help you relax and feel more natural in front of the camera.
I personally know what it’s like to be pregnant (I’ve done it twice!). While it’s BEAUTIFUL and MAGICAL, let’s be real here. It’s also uncomfortable. And awkward. I get it.
So I’m going to post you in ways that not only make you look incredible but also make you feel comfortable and at-ease.
A skilled and experienced maternity photographer will be able to create timeless and beautiful photos that you will cherish for years to come.
Discuss your vision and preferences with the photographer.
Communication is crucial when it comes to getting the maternity photos you want. Schedule a consultation with the photographer to discuss your vision for the shoot and get to know them better.
Before your photo shoot, take some time to think about your vision and preferences. Do you want to take photos indoors or outdoors? Do you have a specific location in mind? What kind of poses do you like? Share your ideas with your photographer and ask for their input as well.
A good photographer will listen to your ideas and work with you to create a plan that meets your needs. Don’t be afraid to speak up if you have concerns or questions during the shoot. Remember, this is your special moment and you want to make sure you get the photos you want.
Choose a location that reflects your personality and style.
When it comes to choosing a location for your maternity photo shoot, it’s important to pick a spot that reflects your personality and style. If you’re a nature lover, consider taking photos in a park or botanical garden. If you’re a city dweller, an urban setting with skyscrapers and graffiti walls might be more your style. You can also choose a location that has special meaning to you and your partner, such as the place where you got engaged or your favorite date spot. Whatever location you choose, make sure it’s a place where you feel comfortable and relaxed so that your photos will capture your true essence.
Consider natural lighting.
When choosing a location for your maternity photo shoot, it’s also important to consider the lighting. Natural lighting can make a big difference in the quality of your photos. Lots of natural light helps create a soft and flattering look, while harsh artificial lighting (overhead lighting and lamps) can be unflattering and create harsh shadows.
Look for locations with plenty of natural light, such as a park or beach during golden hour Golden Hour is the hour before sunset or after sunrise when the light is soft and warm…it’s dreamy.
If you’re shooting indoors (like the nursery), choose a room with large windows that let in plenty of natural light. Your photographer should also be skilled in using natural light to create beautiful and timeless photos.
If you’re shooting outdoors, consider locations with a variety of textures and backdrops, such as parks or gardens. Look for areas with interesting natural elements, like trees, water features, or flowers, that can help add depth and visual interest to your photos.

Think about posing and wardrobe.
When it comes to posing for your maternity photos, it’s important to communicate with your photographer about what you feel comfortable with. Some women prefer more natural, candid shots, while others may want to pose in a specific way to accentuate their bump or show off a particular outfit.
As for wardrobe, choose clothing that makes you feel confident and comfortable. Flowy dresses and tops are a popular choice for maternity photos, as they can help create a soft, feminine look. They’re also super flattering and help accentuate your bump. You may also want to consider bringing a few different outfit options to the shoot, as well as any props or accessories that you would like to include.
And if you’re not sure what to wear, don’t be afraid to ask your photographer for advice. They may have some great suggestions based on the location and style of your shoot.
Finding the right maternity photographer, can take some time and effort, but it’s well worth it to have beautiful, professional-quality photos that you can cherish for years to come. Remember to communicate with your photographer about your vision for the shoot, and don’t be afraid to bring your own ideas and creativity to the table. With the right photographer and a little bit of planning, you can capture this special time in your life in a way that feels authentic and meaningful.
